Welcome to The Good Life. I’m your host, Sean Murray. My guest today is Annie Duke. She was a previous guest on our Decision Mastermind Episode earlier this year.

She’s a professional poker player, an expert on decision making, and the author of “Thinking in Bets,” a New York Times best selling book. It’s about decision making and her life as a professional poker player. It was published in 2018.

She has a new book out: “How to Decide Simple Tools for Making Better Choices.” Our topic today is how to improve our decision making. She’s one of the best at helping us think clearly, develop good habits, and the sound process around making decisions, especially in finance. She is so knowledgeable and has a ton of stories and examples.

This was a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Annie as much as I did. My friends, I bring you Annie Duke.

Annie Duke, welcome to The Good Life.

Annie Duke  1:28

Happy to be here. How are you today?

Sean Murray  1:31

I’m doing great. I’m excited to talk about your new book, “How to Decide Simple Tools for Making Better Choices.” You describe this book as one that offers a framework for making quality decisions and a set of tools to execute on that framework.

It’s full of exercises, thought experiments, templates, and checklists. It’s really a fabulous book. It’s packed full of information, anecdotes, and a lot of learning.

You mentioned right at the beginning a quote that really struck me. I thought we’d start there. You’re making a case for why we should spend time developing our own quality decision process. You say that it’s because there are only two things that determine how your life turns out: luck and the quality of your decisions. You have control over only one of those two things.

Can you talk a little bit about that, and how we should approach decision making?

Annie Duke  2:22

Just to be clear, that thing that you have control over is the quality of your decision. But the funny thing is that I’m not sure that that’s necessarily so clear for most people. I could think about the aphorism, “You make your own luck.” If you think about that, and that’s something I hear people say all the time, that would imply that you have some sort of control over luck.
