Trey Lockerbie (00:03):
On today’s show, we have David Stein back to educate us on assets of the market that are likely overlooked or underappreciated. David is the host of the popular podcast, Money for the Rest of Us, and Author of the book by the same name. He’s a previous allocator for endowments and brings a wealth of knowledge to our very wide-ranging discussion.

Trey Lockerbie (00:21):
For example, we discuss current risks posed by supply chain disruptions and food shortages, why the most contrarian bet today is too short commodities, the recent fall of Netflix and how other tech stocks might follow suit, and updates on Evergrande, China, and Munger’s recent bipolar trade on Alibaba, how David thinks through valuation and where the US stands today compared to the global market, why closed-end funds are likely an overlooked asset trading on the New York Stock Exchange, what they are and why we should consider them, in addition to another asset called business development companies, that and a whole lot more.

Trey Lockerbie (00:55):
I learned so much from this discussion and I hope you do as well. It’s always a pleasure to have David back on the show. So without further ado, here’s my conversation with David Stein.

Intro (01:09):
You are listening to The Investor’s Podcast, where we study the financial markets and read the books that influence self-made billionaires the most. We keep you informed and prepared for the unexpected.

Trey Lockerbie (01:29):
Welcome to The Investor’s Podcast. I’m your host, Trey Lockerbie and today I’m so excited to have back on the show, Mr. David Stein. Welcome back.

David Stein (01:38):
Hey, it’s great to be here, Trey. Thanks.

Trey Lockerbie (01:41):
This is the first time you and I are getting to speak personally, but I’ve been a fan of yours for a long time. I’ve always loved the conversations you’ve had on this show.

Trey Lockerbie (01:48):
And I wanted to kick off this episode by exploring one of the topics that has been just top of mind as of late and that is the disruption of supply chains and how that might create a very bullish picture, actually, for things like commodities, we’re seeing things like food and energy inflation, for example. One of the more alarming concerns today is that we might be seeing a global food shortage later this year. I’m wondering what you’re seeing in the data and are we truly facing down a global famine scenario?

David Stein (02:23):
There is likely, or potentially a food shortage. When you say global famine scenario, here in the US, there’s plenty of food. There will be plenty of food. There will be plenty of food for most places around the world when you get food shortages. And the reason why there’s potential food shortages is just a spike in fertilizer prices.
